The Domhnach Airgid
Metalwork

The Domhnach Airgid. Photo by Marceau.

One of the earliest surviving metalwork images of St. Patrick is on the cover of the Domhnach Airgid (the Silver church), the 39 pages of gospels reputed to have been given by St. Patrick to St. Macartan. The cover was actually commissioned about 1350 AD, by the abbot of Clones. The figure of St. Patirck is thought to be at the lower right of the cover. In the lower left St. Patrick may be handing the Domhnach Airgid to St. MaCartan. The Domhnach Airgid can be seen in the National Museum of Ireland.
